Title: Shadow and Bone
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Goodreads rating: 4.06 stars
Published: 2012 by Henry Holt and Co.

Synopsis
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Thoughts
When I started reading this book I found that I really enjoyed it. I have tried a few different YA books lately, but this book grabbed hold of me at once. The story is quite easy to follow, and I really enjoy the way Bardugo writes. The magic system is quite unlike anything I’ve read so far and it was quite interesting to read. I really enjoyed reading about the Unsea and the Volcra and I thought it was so cool! Like why are they there? Where do they come from?

I like the characters, especially Alina and the Darkling, but Mal as a character was a bit meh. I found him to be a little stereotypical for YA as the love interest and I couldn’t really separate him from the other love interests that I have read in this genre. They all seem quite like in the way they act, especially toward their crush. Otherwise I found the Darkling super interesting and I want to know more about him and his backstory!

My mind wasn’t completely blown by this book, but all in all I really enjoyed this book.

My rating: 4/5 stars

Until next time!
